Food Recipe: Coffee Jelly

A couple of episodes back I mentioned how Alex and I had made coffee jelly over the weekend, and that it was go damn delicious. We’re big fans of discovering and making healthy gaming snacks here at Sass Effect, so I figured that sharing the recipe made sense. That and the fact that it’s a really fast way to get a whole bunch of caffeine into your system quickly, which is perfect for long gaming sessions.

Coffee Jelly

  • 1.5 Tbsp gelatin
  • 3 Tbsp water
  • 60g sugar
  • 480 ml hot coffee (we went with the cheap Aldi shit)

Take a medium bowl and soak the gelatin in the water for a few minutes. Add the sugar and coffee, then stir until the gelatin is completely melted. Pour into a shallow pan, cool to room temperature and then stick that bad boy in the fridge for at least 4 hours.

It’s up to you what you want to serve the jelly with – we went with custard because we’re addicted to the stuff but cream (either pouring or whipped) tends to be a popular choice.

For a firmer consistency you can use Agar Agar instead of gelatin. This is great if you don’t want your soft jelly to disintegrate when you try to take it into work. It’s also good for cubing which makes for a more aesthetically pleasing dessert, or if you want to go down the delicious Japanese route and pop pieces into a milk-based drink.

If you decide to go down this road, use 2 tsp of Agar Agar powder/flakes for every cup of liquid. It will also set hard at room temperature. I don’t recommend trying it before refrigerating – warm, firm jelly is WEIRD.
